The Concept & Vision

Mati Kanduri is a textile applique artwork inspired by the plant commonly known as “Dwarf Copper Leaf,” locally called Matikanduri in Assamese. The motifs are recreated in contemporary style using applique technique with printed scrap fabric to highlight key form of the plant ,whose name, medicinal values and cultural presence are gradually being forgotten. This artwork is part of my ongoing exploration of native plants and herbs from Assam.

Through this artwork, I aim to revive awareness of lesser-known native medicinal plants and preserve their identity through textile storytelling. Inspired by years of observing, collecting, and photographing local herbs, the work reflects my ongoing exploration of their forms, cultural significance, and connection to Assamese landscapes. As many of these plants are slowly disappearing from Assamese village landscapes, this artwork serves as an act of documentation and remembrance, bridging craft, ecology, and cultural memory through contemporary textile art.
